Classic Mercedes ‘five pin’ Over Volt Protection Relay (OVP) Used in a wide range of Old Timer Mercedes models, notable among which the SL and SLC 107 chassis.
In July 2022, there was the shock sudden absence of an essential relay that was universal across seven different chassis codes in the 70’s and 80’s. The Over Voltage Protection relay that is responsible for powering up multiple electrical modules in the car is a common fault and for as long as we’ve known, it has been a relatively inexpensive item to replace. When, overnight, the regular and reliable supply simply vanished. SLSHOP went from supplying and fitting dozens each month, to not being able to offer any solution.
Through our contacts in electronic repairs, we were quickly able to start supplying reconditioned units on a service exchange basis, but this was, by comparison, very costly as well as time consuming.
Then, in late August 2023 a phone call from a long time partner of SLSHOP introduced us to a manufacturer equipped to produce the relay, albeit in enormous production quantities, but we had little choice but to take the bait.
Classic Mercedes owners were crying out for a solution, and cars were locked away in garages waiting to be mended “one day”.
Working samples were extensively road-tested, in-house at SLSHOP in a variety of applications before the final sign off for the production run was given. The news was very well received in the Classic Mercedes community. 56 units were pre-sold, before the shipment had arrived in December, with hundreds more sold since.
For the DIYer; the most common symptom of a faulty OVP relay is an ABS warning light on the dash, regardless of whether there is an actual fault with braking. An instant failure for technical inspections in most countries, including UK MOT.
With over 5,000 R107s alone still on the roads here in the UK, the lack of available OVP Relays was just another essential hurdle for owners and specialists like SLSHOP to overcome.

Hardtop roof “Hockey stick” chrome trims that adorn the left and right lower edges of the SL R107 removable roof. These trims have long been a tricky customer. Exposed on the lower edge of the hardtop and frighteningly fragile, it’s a rarity to even see a car on which they have not sustained some degree of damage. For years, SLSHOP has been able to offer a reconditioning exchange service, but with dwindling numbers of repairable original units, and repair costs spiralling in the recent economic crisis, we doubled down on our efforts to find new replacement parts. Eventually landing on having them made ourselves in partnership with the manufacturer of one of SLSHOP’s most popular products, the R107 lower sill chrome trims.
In the same way that we did for the lower sill chromes, these hard top trims have been manufactured using thicker gauge materials than the originals, making them far longer lasting and more resilient to knocks.
After three phases of prototyping, the final approval was given earlier this month and stock arrived with us in February 2024

It was near daily, that our SLSHOP Part Team were being asked to supply all original tool kits for the owners of Mercedes models from 1960’s through 80’s. and whilst there were small age related variations that matter to the purists, many owners were perfectly happy to own something that is, fundamentally correct, accepting of the fact that it might vary in some small way from what the car left the factory with.
Our team at SLSHOP has proudly assembled this modern reproduction kit, using a combination of new reproduction, new genuine and new universal components. Injection moulded in a more compliant plastic than the originals, the manufacturer is so confident in the product that it comes with a lifetime warranty against plastic fatigue and cracking.
For years, you were stuck with a selection of home-brewed 3D Printed replacement parts, in questionable colour choices. But that is no longer the case. Owners can rest easy knowing that each of the common problem parts on an R129 interior is available to purchase, in a full spectrum of factory correct colour options, in a premium quality that is good enough for Mercedes themselves.
You might take it for granted. Hardly even noticed that it was there? Until it starts rattling, leaking, or sounding terrible. The exhaust on your Classic Benz. But for the 300SL R107 model, a failed exhaust was an especially painful experience as the cost of a replacement is fast approaching £4000 from a Mercedes main dealer. That’s IF they have stock at the time.
We knew that SLSHOP had to intervene. But in reaching out to the usual brands, nobody was willing to attempt the tight twisting front section that makes the genuine one so expensive in the first place. Eventually we landed on a small independent company in Italy. Originals were sent, samples received, alterations made, and final sign off was reached.
Produced in Aluminised steel, we plucked the perfect balance of resistance to corrosion, without having to make the compromise in sound quality that is associated with stainless.
Owners can now save thousands over what was previously the only known option, and SLSHOPs a clever bit of designing foresight means we’ve separated the exhaust in two pieces, allowing more tolerance and adjustment during installation, as well as taking more than 1 metre off the shipping length, saving customers an average of 77% on shipping fees.

Whilst a premium, trackable, insured service was always our first focus, The recent economic crises pushed the cost out of control. Customers buying small items were being quoted disproportionate shipping rates. The introduction of a Royal Mail tracked 24 service has afforded a saving more than half. Whilst the premium services remain an option for emergencies and oversized parcels.
Shipping Glass? Are you mad? Yes; we are. SLSHOP at your service. It’s almost unheard of, that suppliers are willing to trust large sheet of glass with a courier. Understandably so as all shippers have clauses in their contract about fragile items. But we couldn’t ignore our customers need to replace glass in their Classic Mercedes. We embarked on the journey of finding a packaging solution that would stand up to the journey across the globe.
It’s no secret, many glass items were harmed in the making of this product. It took us months, but we eventually landed on a packaging solution of our own design that we, quite literally, kicked down the stairs in the name of science. The glass survived its fall so we shipped it to a friend in Scotland which it survived. So we shipped it to France and back… it arrived back at SLSHOP HQ in one piece. And to top it off… it was an affordable solution. We’d done it!
We are now willing and able to ship glass around the world without breaking the bank, nor the glass!

Investment in new equipment means we are now re-using our inbound cardboard. Deliveries to SLSHOP see the carboard processed into soft bouncy netting that has cut our usage of plastic bubble wrap and polystyrene void fill by more than 80%, as well as cutting our cardboard waste to near zero. Not only is the new netting infinitely recyclable, but the financial savings have been passed onto our customers in their shipping rates.
