The Mercedes-Benz 280SL was introduced in 1974, the little brother to the already established V8 engined R107 SL. Despite the smaller displacement, the 280SL was no slouch, offering ample power and acceleration thanks to the decreased weight beneath the bonnet. The six cylinder unit is some 50kg lighter than the V8, and with over 180bhp on tap, these cars can be spritely.

This example was built in 1984, a time when buyers had a choice of 280SL, 350SL or 500SL. A year later in 1985 the 300SL and 420SL would take over from the 280SL and 350SL, heralding a new and final chapter for the R107 and introducing range of cars that the market has always seen as superior.

The superiority of the 1986-1989 cars has always been a subject of debate. What one gains in handling and braking ability is somewhat lost in classic style. It is this classic style, combined with period colours and of course, matching hub caps that is driving an increased interest in pre1986 cars.

Finished in Classic White, this 280SL was built in 1984. Supplied new by Bargate Motors of Boston, the first owner opted for black MB Tex instead of leather. Leather was an expensive option back in 1984, but MB Tex also wears extremely well in the long term, and isn’t so prone to cracking like poorly cared for leather.

With it’s perfect chrome and deep white paintwork, this car is very hard to date for the untrained eye… Built in the 1980s, styled in the late 1960s and wearing a 1950s colour scheme, it really is a lovely looking SL.

it has an impeccable and well organised service history folder detailing a lifetime of care.

Finding high calibre early cars is extremely difficult. As values fell through the late 1990s and into the early 2000s, many of these cars simply dropped off the radar. With declining values, the inclination to spend large amounts of money on maintenance and upkeep also fell.

This car demonstrates consistent ownership, a loved and carefully maintained car throughout it’s life. Accompanying this car is a well organised ring bound folder containing a great deal of documentation and invoices pertaining to service work. Almost every MOT certificate is present, dating back to the first one in 1987.
