SL60 AMGs were built in tiny numbers, with RHD cars even rarer, it thought just 49 cars were built with the steering wheel on the right side. Exclusive, but SLSHOP’s inventory has this car and another in stock, and both are cars that were first delivered to customers in Scotland. This is a 1995 model, finished in discreet Azurite Blue, creating a stealthy, high performance R129, which is little known outside a well-informed, enthusiastic group of AMG enthusiasts. Having covered just shy of 53,000 miles since it arrived in that Scottish dealership some 30 years ago, its condition is such those 53,000 miles could be considered delivery ones. These cars pre-date AMG’s incorporation under the Mercedes-Benz company, being built independently, making them rare, historically significant models, that drive very well indeed.
An expensive car when it was ordered new, it’s not surprising that the first, and subsequent, owners of this special model have lavished plenty of love and attention on it. As such it really does look and feel like a car that’s just been delivered, it difficult to believe that it’s actually covered 53,000 miles in the 30 years since that first owner took it home. There’s nothing out of place inside and out, with the beige leather in superb condition – the only sign of wear being a couple of indents in the rear seat backs highlighting they’ve spent a good deal of time down. The bodywork and AMG split-rim alloy wheels are in superb condition – but we’d shod those wheels with some new high performance tyres – with the engine bay super clean, and the colour-coded blue fabric hood in also in excellent condition.
There’s a box file containing the handbook, a stamped up service booklet, MOTs, old tax discs and receipts that demonstrate that the SL60’s lived a charmed life, its condition testament to that. There’s a period brochure for the R129 SL among that, as well as the additional booklets for the Becker stereo system which has iPod (remember those) connection.
SL60s don’t come up for sale often, but like buses, a couple have arrived at the SLSHOP presently. We don’t expect either to hang around for long, as these highly capable, very desirable, rare AMG models are increasingly appreciated among AMG enthusiasts for not just their historical significance, but also their prodigious performance and enjoyable handling. That they’re subtle enough to fly under the radar only adds to their appeal, these collectable R129s among the rarest and most exciting models ever from AMG’s pre-merger line of vehicles.
