The Mercedes-Benz R170 SLK was conceived as a modern equivalent of the original 190SL roadster of the 1950s, with which it shared a 94 inch wheelbase. This was also the car that introduced the world to the wonders of the mass produced vario folding roof, a genius piece of design that allows this car to switch between tin top and no top at the flick of a switch.

The name SLK was derived from sportleicht (sporty), leicht (light), and kurz (short). It was the first Mercedes-Benz to wear an SL in the nameplate and carry a four cylinder engine since the 190SL.

Now becoming sought after as a usable modern classic, the R170 SLK is finding it’s feet in the classic car world.

With a supercharged 2.3 litre engine, these little roadsters are highly addictive to drive, engaging and rewarding on any road. With just over 190bhp on tap and coupe levels of comfort with the roof on, they really are versatile and fun little cars.
